Along the Rhine from Bingen to Koblenz

Near Bingen it becomes narrow for the Rhine. Starting here it must wind through the deeply cut ravine of the Rhenish slate mountains. This area, with its shallows (e.g., Binger Loch), its vertical cliffs (e.g., Loreley) and its difficult flow patterns (e.g., the Rhine loop near St. Goar and Boppard) is dangerous to shipping and boating. No fewer than 18 fortresses and castles along both sides of the river line the way from the Mice Tower at Bingen, past Assmannshausen, Bacharach, Kaub Oberwesel, St. Goar and Boppard to Koblenz where the Mosel flows into the Rhine.
